150 YEARS OF INVOLVEMENT
The John family has had a very long and esteemed association with the South Australian wine industry.
1845 – Traugott Benjamin John (Great Great Grandfather) arrived in South Australia from Prussia. Leased 15 acres of land from George Fife Angus and planted one of South Australia’s first vineyards.
1875 – Christian Paul John (Great Grandfather) was apprenticed as a carpenter and then progressed to become a Master Cooper working at the ‘Chateau Cooperage’ at Tanunda in the Barossa Valley.
1890 – Arthur Paul John (Grandfather) – Master Cooper, established A.P. John & Sons Cooperage, Barossa Valley. ‘AP’ trained all of his 5 sons as Coopers. The Cooperage is still family owned, and is recognized as Australia’s premium Cooperage.
1947 – Galvin Hulbert John (Father) after returning from service overseas, returned to the Cooperage as (Master Cooper) Manager. Due to a lull in the demand for oak ‘GH’ joined B Seppelt & Sons in 1971 as Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 1984.
1967 – Phillip Galvin John (Brother) joined B Seppelt & Sons where he became Senior Fortified Winemaker. A position he held until 1979. Phillip then progressed to Senior Oenologist for Lindeman Wines, responsible for the famous Bin 65 Chardonnay.
1969 – Stephen Christopher John joined B Seppelt & Sons where he became Senior Red Winemaker, a position held until 1984. He then joined Wolf Blass Wines International, as Senior White Winemaker. Following the purchase of Quelltaler Estate at Watervale in 1987, was transferred to Quelltaler as General Manager/Winemaker. In 1990 was promoted to General Manager Operations for the Wolf Blass Group.
1995 – Stephen John Wines established and first wines released.
